Apun Ki V-Day

Almost a week after the hype and hoopla over V-Day died down, I sat down to pen down how the day went about for me and a group of like-minded singles (all frenz of mine).
I expected to write as usual…a boring ‘daasthaan’ of how me and my friends sat down by the corner seat of a hip-n-happenin ( for some, ofcourse) coffee place, and watched all the love-birds coochy-coo and fly past us, painting the whole place red, and leaving a whole other places (read, ours) totally totally ‘berang’.Things hit an abyss when our otherwise demure kaam-waali-bhai also walked in arm-in-arm with her ‘Bhai-frand’.

It also left a whole lot of unanswered questions on why Cupid only strikes a select few with those rosy arrows, and why certain others (read, us, again) , have been left wondering whether we have developed some kind of an immunity to the ‘happy’ wounds caused by his otherwise defectless art.

Or probably, on a six-sigma scale, we were those 3.4 millionth piece , that came out to be defective, when Cupid’s finesse was put to test.

To comfort ourselves, we constantly reminded each other of how pricelessly great we were, and how no ordinary mortal deserved diamonds (did I leave out something even more precious!!??) like us. But deep inside, we knew there was something, or rather, there wasn’t something in us, as a consequence of which we sat there @ the Coffee Place, celebrating our singledom.

But hey, ask the ‘happily’ coochy-cooing birdies (atleast for a day), whether they ever long to be single? The answer, most certainly on any non-valentine day is “YES!!!”

After all, they too miss that freedom of just doing ‘phaalthu time pass’ with friends, and yeah, which soul, who’s on a shoe-string monthly budget, wouldnt have pre-b’day or pre-anniversary pangs of how expensive a gift to get for their respective Valentines….
Why talk about just b’day’s and anniversaries (add in the various monthesories or weekesaries too, in some cases, for good effect), they also have the fully marketed V-day to fear (!!??) about…….

On taking into account all this and more( well , I omitted the phone-bills , daily coffees (@ a khool-hangout, ofcourse)and related expenses), we sometimes are lead to wonder whether this totally commercialized form of LOVE is actually worth feeling missed out in our ( as I mentioned earlier) ‘berang’ lives, at all…….hmmmmm….what about all those cuuute romantic stories we hear our grand-parents and parents talk, about those retro-days , where things sounded like it was more of an emotion than a materialistic comfort. Are we missing the real message a Valentine’s Day initially intended to give?

Well, shall wait for the answer until next V-Day, and see for myself whether Cupid strikes lucky @ least this time around with this wastrel of a specimen….. ;)
